The Show was a project I did at the Cooyar Show Campdraft competition in South West Queensland. Like a lot of my personal work, I tend to gravitate towards groups of people who come together around a shared skill, craft or passion. Stepping into these worlds is always fascinating, it offers a small but honest glimpse into what drives them. As with some of my past projects, my assistant and I set up a makeshift studio to photograph the riders. We positioned ourselves just outside the horse ring. We then approached riders as they came out of the ring, sweaty, tired, and often still on horseback to see if they’d be up for a portrait. Most were more than happy to. It was also, from memory, about 1000 degrees. A big thanks to all the riders who took the time to dismount and sit on an old oil drum for me.
